Privacy Policy

annote ("the App", "we", "our") is an app for capturing and reviewing highlights from physical books, developed by Novaire Digital Pty Ltd ("Developer"). This Privacy Policy explains what data the App uses, how it is used, and your choices as a user. The short version: the App keeps data to a minimum, does not sell it, and only uses it to turn your highlights into a library you can review.

2. Data we use and why

2.1 Camera and photos

• What: A photo of a book page or passage that you choose to capture, taken with the camera or picked from your photo library.
• Why: To read the text of your highlight with optical character recognition (OCR) and turn it into an editable card.
• How: The image is used only to extract the text you are capturing. You choose whether to keep the original photo with the card or discard it once the text is saved. The App does not scan your wider photo library.

2.2 Your highlights and notes

• What: The text of the highlights you save, any notes or tags you add, and the book they belong to.
• Why: This is the library the App exists to build, and the basis for spaced-repetition review.
• How: Your highlights are stored on your device. If you turn on optional account sync, they are also stored in your account so you can reach them on another device.

2.3 AI synthesis (optional)

• What: The text of selected highlights, when you ask the App to synthesise or connect them.
• Why: To generate reflections and connections drawn from what you highlighted.
• How: When you use this feature, the relevant highlight text is sent to an AI provider to produce the result. Only the text needed for the request is sent. It is not used to advertise to you.

2.4 Account and authentication (optional)

• What: An email address or sign-in identifier, only if you create an account to back up and sync your library.
• Why: To keep your highlights available across devices and restore them if you reinstall. The App is usable without an account.

2.5 Usage data and analytics

We do not collect analytics, crash reporting, or usage telemetry for advertising.

3. How we share your data

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing or advertising.

Data is shared with the following services only as described above:

• AI provider: selected highlight text, only when you use the synthesis feature.
• Sync backend: your highlights and account identifier, only if you turn on account sync.

5. Data storage and security

• Your highlights, notes, and app settings are stored locally on your device.
• If you turn on account sync, a copy is stored in your account so it can reach your other devices. You can turn sync off and delete that copy.
• All network communication uses HTTPS (TLS).
• We do not run advertising or profiling on your reading.

6. Children's privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

7. Your choices and deletion

• You can delete any highlight or book from your library at any time.
• You can turn account sync off, which deletes the synced copy from our backend.
• Uninstalling the App removes the data stored on your device.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date above.
