Common questions

How does the estimate work?

Nightcap uses the Widmark formula with your body profile (sex used for the estimate, weight and height) and the drinks you log, then allows for alcohol leaving your body over time. It shows an estimated time your reading reaches zero, rounded up, with "Not a time to drive" under it. That line is there because the estimate can be wrong in either direction, and because many drivers, such as learner and provisional drivers in Australia, have a limit of zero. If you are driving, do not drink.

Why can the number be wrong?

It is a calculation, not a measurement. Food, how fast you drank, medication, your health and how accurately a drink was logged (its size and strength) all change the real figure, and the formula cannot see any of them. Treat it as a rough guide, never as a breath test.

How do I change my place or driving limit, and why do the UK nations differ?

Go to Profile > Place and limit. Your place sets the driving limit, what a standard drink or unit means and which helplines you see; you can also choose a lower limit if one applies to you. The UK is split because the law is: Scotland's limit is 0.05, while England, Wales and Northern Ireland use 0.08. Nightcap never guesses which UK nation you are in, so you choose it yourself. The United States uses 0.08 (0.05 in Utah); in Canada, where provinces set their own lower limits, you pick the limit that applies to you.

How do notifications work?

Reminders are scheduled on your phone, and Nightcap sends at most two on any day: a morning check-in after a bigger night, a water reminder, alcohol-free milestones and a weekly recap. Turn each one on or off in Profile > Notifications. Nightcap never notifies you when your estimate drops under a limit or reaches zero.

How do I export or delete my data?

Profile > Export my data saves a file with everything. Profile > Delete account deletes your account and its data from our servers, then the copy on your phone. Without the app, follow the steps on the delete account page.

How do I cancel or restore a subscription?

Subscriptions are handled by the store. Cancel on iPhone in Settings · your name · Subscriptions, or on Android in Google Play · Payments and subscriptions · Subscriptions. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. To restore Premium on a new phone, open Nightcap Premium from the Profile tab and tap Restore purchases, signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account you subscribed with.

What can my crew see?

Your display name, avatar, alcohol-free days this month, current streak, water this week and challenge progress. Boards rank only alcohol-free days, streaks and water. In a live session, members see your estimate only if you switch sharing on, and you can switch it off at any time. You can report or block another user. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
